SPACE MARINE VEHICLE PLAQUES – Named Vehicles
This technique is perfect for large scrolls, plaques, and banners. It does require a little bit of patience and planning, but it's not too difficult once you get the hang of it.

Preparation
Complete the highlighting and shading of the entire model before you paint the icon. If you plan on putting battle-damage on the model, finish all of the following steps for the large script before you start painting on the dust, muck, scorch-marks, and scratches. Set the model aside to dry entirely before you add the script.

This type of freehand work really relies on some forethought. You need to come up with an interesting phrase or word and then decide how it will fit in the area that will receive the text. This technique also works well for hand-painted slogans and graffiti.

In the step-by-step instructions below, we used black text over a light background color. Obviously, other combinations are possible.

Step 1 Write out your phrase or word on a piece of paper first. This step will cut out any guesswork and gives you a little practice.
Step 2 Now, with a pencil that has a 2B lead or softer, write out the word. Keep in mind the number of letters that make up the word so that you can place the central letter or letters in the middle of your plaque.
Step 3

After placing the central letters on the plaque, place the first and last letters at the far edges of the plaque.

Step 4

Next, fill in the rest of the letters, leaving adequate space between each letter.

Step 5

Finally, go over the pencils with either white or black paint (depending on the background).
