BRETONNIAN FIELD AND HERALDRY
Even though you may not collect a Bretonnian army, the techniques shown below can be applied to most any force – regardless of which game range it's from.

Preparation
First, decide on what you would like the shield's field to look like. It could be a solid color, halved, quartered, checked, or divided up in any way you see fit. We chose a quartered field. Some other ideas for Bretonnian heraldry can be found in the Black Gobbo 7 article entitled Emblazoning Bretonnian Shields.

Note: To help you hold the shield while painting, use a piece of Blu-Tac to attach the shield to a suitable project stand.

Step 1 Paint the lighter of the two colors over the entire field first.
Step 2 Now, use a very fine brush and a dark color and paint the pattern on the shield.
Step 3 Next, fill in only the dark sections.
Step 4 Finally, highlight both the dark and light sections of the field. Allow the shield to dry.
Step 5

Now, take a sharpened pencil with a soft lead (2B or lower will work best, as harder leads may scratch the painted surface) and lightly draw out the design that you wish to paint. If you are working over a dark color, use a white charcoal pencil (these tools are available at most art supply or craft stores).

Be sure to use an old paintbrush or tissue to whisk any graphite dust away from the model before you start painting. Excess graphite dust will dull and discolor your paint.

Step 6

Choose a color with which to paint the Knight’s heraldry. A dark icon works much better on a light field and vice versa for a dark field. For fields that are two colors or are very busy, try using contrasting color or even no color at all.

Paint the heraldry marking onto the shield while attempting to stay within the lines. For white heraldry, try putting down a light grey color first. It may take a few layers to render your heraldry fully.

Step 7 Finally, finish off your shield with gold trim and battle damage.
